EASTVSWEST SPRING STYLE SHOWDOWN TODD OLDHAM CRAFTER IN CHIEF GEARGUIDE MAGIC 10 REGISTRYROCKSTAR (HOW TO BE ONE) | |

spring sings Babe sta Beat!

W arm weather can ’ t come fast enough! The subzero temps of the winter have us craving some sunshine and some outdoor time! In this issue we were lucky enough to shoot with Molly Magnuson and stylist Michel Onofrio for our West Coast and East Coast stories. One bursts with color while the other is distinctly city-cool. It’s an unusual fashion season right now—there are so many companies making statements with their clothing—for instance, Mini Rodini’s picketing veggie print declares, “Eat Less Meat,” while Molo’s oddball skull print implores a diet from technology may be in order. The messaging is important and if you choose to rock it, rock on! If not, well there are tons of awesome options, from Hugo Loves Tiki’s vibrant fruit print to BangBang Copenhagen’s furry monster tees. In this issue, we were honored to have been able to interview fashion design legend and uber-crafter, Todd Oldham, and learn more about his inspiration for his DIY co., Kid Made Modern. The crafts are definitely cool enough that parents will want to be part of the action, from sun catchers to journals to comic books. Oldham even put together a bespoke craft for the issue, so get out your gluestick and try it out! Speaking of cool people, we also got to talk to that rad fam behind Tiny Whales, Brittany and Shaun Wagoner, in this issue. We love how they always celebrate the notion of “local” as being a local is special indeed! And if that wasn’t enough, we also chatted with Piero Lissoni, the architect behind 45 Park Place, and got a little insight on the visionary behind the luxury high-rise that’s one of the newest adds to our local skyline. This season, keep following us on social—we have lots of events, giveaways, and breaking news that you’ll want to keep apprised of! In the meantime, feel free to reach out anytime online or, better yet, see ya in the shop!

CHECK OUT | ROCKTOPIA ON BROADWAY Yes, we know, 2018 is chock-full of blockbuster Broadway openings: from Frozen to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. This is slated to be a big year for musicals. But what caught our eye was a limited run called Rocktopia, a concert that seamlessly blends the classics like Beethoven, Stravinsky and Puccini, with classic rockers like The Beatles, Hendrix, Heart and Journey, demonstrating the parity between the musical giants spanning the ages. At its core it considers, or even posits, that those 18th century maestros were just as much rockstar as anyone we equate with the term. Limited run fromMarch 20--April 29th.

A CAR SEAT IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING Clek introduces Merino wool to their car seats. C ity parents are increasingly seeking out natural, chemical-free materials for all of their gear, and Clek is heeding the call. The car seat company adds Merino wool seat fabrics, dubbed “mammoth,” to the collection. The natural wool means that the seat is flame retardant free (wool does that naturally!). Another benefit of the wool material (which is super soft, by the way), is that it also provides natural temperature control, an important plus both in summer and winter. The fabric will roll out this year on the Foonf and the Fllo convertible car seats, and then the Oobr to follow. TINY WHALES chatting with

24

babesta beat spring/summer 2018

COOL CALIFORNIA MAKES A SPLASH WITH TINY WHALES. WE GOT TO DIVE IN WITH HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM BRITTANY AND SHAUN WAGONER.

A trip to an aquarium and a pursuant encounter with a pod of Vaquitas inspired the name of this made-in LA, California cool brand. Co-founder (with her husband Shaun), Brittany Wagoner explains: “You have this new little human in your life. . . Somehow in a matter of moments they manage to flip your whole world upside down and change everything in a massive way, yet they are just this tiny little thing, tiny and massive all at the same time—a tiny whale.” Tiny Whales was born in 2008, when the Wagoners were newlyweds and yearned for a creative outlet. With a cute little nephew that they were determined to spoil, they set their sites on the kids’ market, determining (after some disappointing shopping expeditions) that there was room for something cooler. Shaun’s screen printing business and Brittany’s background in styling were perfect complements, and they set forth, soon joined by their own “tiny whales” in 2010 and 2012 respectively. Every season they deliver a collection of easy-breezy separates that kids (and their adults) will daydream about. We’ve been obsessed with the brand at Babesta and love to see how much they’ve grown over the years, from a few basic bodies to a full range of styles and fresh fabrics, all with West Coast surf & skate styling. We got to chat with Brittany about the latest collection, her inspirations and the importance of “local” season after season. How do you get inspired every season? That’s a tough question because we really do draw inspiration from a lot of places. We don’t really have a ritual or a place we go to be inspired; it just happens organically. Generally, we come up with a theme and a color palette first, then we spend months writing out ideas for graphics and clever sayings. In fact, we never really stop writing down different ideas. About 50% of what we brainstorm makes it to the collection and then the other half may never see the light of day. We love surf and skate culture so that always comes into play each season as does our own childhood nostalgia. What’s the importance of local to you? That theme comes up every season and you have a dedicated local line to boot! Local is not something Shaun and I grew up thinking about as kids in Orange County, California. Everything

was corporate, mass produced and made somewhere else our entire childhood. It wasn’t until we were older and these local events and platforms for artisans started to pop up that really made us rethink how we live and interact with our community. This was a major influence on how we chose to run our business. Thinking locally has helped us to connect more with those around us, and the families and entrepreneurs behind the businesses that we support. Every Tiny Whales tee is made in Los Angeles, CA. Our fabrics are milled in LA, cut and sewn in LA, garment dyed in LA and screen printed in LA. We work with 7 different family-run business who help to make Tiny Whales happen. We know the owners, and when we stop in for business we always end up talking about our families. Doing things this way isn’t the easiest or most cost effective but it’s a choice that we feel good about and the end product is always something that we and our factories are all really proud of. item ourselves in the wee hours of the night and our entire inventory fit in a couple of 20-gallon containers in our home office. We used our savings to fund it all and we called it a hobby. It was a very modest first couple of years but eventually Tiny Whales began to grow, and with that came many new products, but we’ve always stayed true to our core which is graphic tees. In 2013 we took a big leap and went into production on a tee shirt just for us, made from scratch in Los Angeles. After that we knew the sky was the limit and we set a goal to add a new body style each season. First a tee shirt, and a onesie, then a raglan and a tank top, one new body style after the next. In 2018 we will be offering over 24 different apparel products, from tee shirts to denim jackets, dresses, rompers, knit beanies and dad hats. Spring/Summer 2018 is a 121 piece collection and Fall/Winter 2018 will offer over 150 pieces. Where do you make the tees? What’s the production process like? How has the line evolved over the years? Tiny Whales 2018 is so different from Tiny Whales 2008. In ’08 we were limited to products from a couple of LA-based apparel blanks companies, which consisted of a tee shirt, a onesie, a zipper hoodie and a beanie in their chosen color palettes. We were hand printing every single

What’s the Tiny Whales lifestyle? Tiny Whales is effortlessly cool. Whether lounging on the couch watching a movie, ripping down the slides at the park, or out on an adventure, we make the clothes kids want to live in. Not only because they’re super cozy, but because the kid is proud to wear it! We are not in a clique, we are a brand for the everyday kid from all walks of life. What sort of challenges have you had in building the brand? ALL of the challenges! But Shaun and I have had the unique challenge of running a business not only as business partners but also as husband and wife and mother and father . We are all those things to each other all the time so over the years we’ve had to learn a lot about balance in our roles and when we play into one more then another. It’s a ton of trial and error and it’s never quite perfect—I mean let’s be serious when is mom not mom? But we’ve made it work and we will continue to do so because we both love all the roles we play. What is your favorite thing about your job? That’s a long list but top five would be: seeing designs come to life; being our own boss; working from home with family; supporting our local economy; and getting to see our little shoppers rocking Tiny Whales out and

about and on social media. It really doesn’t get much better then standing in the check out at our local market behind a kid wearing our “Local” trucker hat. If you weren’t doing this what would you be doing? We love Tiny Whales so it’s hard to imagine doing anything else but if we had to make a change it would need to be a major upgrade, one that looks like a hammock and a laptop on a beach in Hawaii (hahaha)!! What makes a great t-shirt? The fit, the fabric and knowing it was made ethically. Clever well-designed graphics help too! Weekends usually consist of a walk to the beach—we’re super lucky to live less than a mile from the coast of Huntington Beach. We hit the local coffee shops and cafes and of course the parks and playgrounds. Surf and skate culture rules Southern California and it’s been a part of both our lives since childhood and always will be. We’ve shared our love for it with our girls and their interest is piquing now that they are a bit older and more confident. More weekends at the skate park and beach with our family would make us very happy. What are your weekends like? Do you live your tee culture (skateboard, surfing etc.)!

What do you consider West Coast style? West Coast style is very diverse, depending on what part of the coast you’re on. We lived in Washington state for a very long year and a half and the style there is very utilitarian and practical, for the ever-changing weather patterns. They wear lots of outdoor apparel and active wear because everyone is outdoors all the time. The weather doesn’t stop them— it’s pretty impressive really—we once saw couple out for a casual jog in the snow. In Southern California where we grew up and still reside, the style is more of an anything goes mentality. We have mild weather here and our summer to winter wardrobe doesn’t change much. We love tee shirts and good denim, we dress them up and down. Sneakers and sandals outnumber any other type of footwear in our closets. We really embrace it all, surf and skate apparel, street wear, bohemian, rock n roll, punk and grunge, even preppy. I’d say the only thing we don’t do well here is winter apparel. We are known to wear beanies year-round and wool coats when it’s 60 degrees out because we know that we have maybe a one-month window to wear them in and even that isn’t guaranteed. Do your kids get involved in the business at all? Yes! Our two daughters, ages 5 and 7 years, have grown up in and around the business and are involved when they want to be. They love to let us know what their favorite pieces are each season and which ones they need in their own closets. And of course, we joke with them a lot that they need to learn the business, so they can run it for us someday—which would be amazing—but I think we’d really love to see them make their own dreams happen. Tell us about SS18! (We love it!) Spring Summer 2018 is our “Tropicool” collection and the name really speaks for itself. This collection is loaded with tropical vibes from fruity button-down shirts and hats to printed terry loop rompers and vintage inspired tourist tees. When we finished designing the collection we knew we had to have our friend Stephanie Matthew shoot it for us in Hawaii—it was a match made in heaven. Kids’ fashion has fewer rules, and we definitely live vicariously through our designs. A lot of times we will design something and then say we need it in our size, and our customers have been known to say the same. We’ve released a few designs in adult sizes over the years, but we never wanted it to take away from our main focus, and what we feel we do better, which is kids’ apparel. We did add tween girls sizing in 2017 and it has been well received. We may size up for boys too if the interest grows, but for now we feel like we’ve found our niche in sizing. What do you love about kids’ fashion? Have you thought of sizing up to adult?

What’s your personal style? Picture Tiny Whales in its mid-30’s and that’s our style. A bit more mature, but still cool and casual. We live in tee shirts, denim and Vans slip ons 99% of the time. What’s the coolest thing you’ve done as a family? The coolest thing we did as a family last year was our summer road trip. We took two and a half weeks off to drive up the West Coast and back. We have family and friends all along the coast of California, Oregon and Washington that we visited along the way. Our girls are road warriors, which made the long hours driving a breeze. Seeing your kids experience new things for the first time is so inspiring—it helps keep you young at heart. Thanks to suggestions on social media and from locals we knew, we managed to play, eat, sleep and get around like locals everywhere we visited. I think that’s the best way to experience a new place.

BABESTA REGISTRY HOW-TO

roundup Registry

Come in or make an appointment to ensure a one-on-one experience. registry@babesta.com.

Get a high level understanding or deep dive into a category with one of our experts. Make your product decisions, and start your registry. If you give us your basic info, we can set the registry up with whatever items you want to add, then give you the links so you can change, add or delete as you wish. Friends & family can shop online, call in, or come in store. As for delivery, you can also decide how you want to receive the gifts. Do you want us to hold them til you’re ready or send them to you as they are purchased?

Anything not purchased? Enjoy 10% off on the one-time registry closeout.

What to expect when you’re expecting (and need to create a baby registry!) W e know , it ’ s a new world when you find out you’re pregnant. Things shift from nightclubs to nighttime feedings practically overnight. Yes, there are so many new things you’ve got to know and buy, but fear not! It doesn’t need to be overwhelming. The first step: find a book or a blog that reflects your area (we like Well Rounded for NYC moms). Then join a group of expecting parents who you can dish with (in our area HRP Mamas is a great one). Once you get some comfort with your new world, stop in a local baby store and gather some intel from those of us who live and breathe this daily! There’s nothing we like better than to talk down an overwhelmed parent. We spend our days thinking about the needs of city parents (and how they differ from other parents out there) and reviewing products as to how they address our unique city needs. How does the stroller stand up on the city streets? Where is that crib made and of what sorts of materials are used? What sort of values does a company hold and how is their customer service? All of these things help inform us, and as such, we can inform you. Once you’re ready, it’s easy. Either pop on into the store or make an appointment so we can guarantee some one on one time. Then we’ll walk you through a high level of the different categories (strollers, car seats, nursery furniture) or deep dive into a category and compare and contrast different models so you can really understand the differences and weigh what matters most to you. Once you’ve made some decisions, we write down your registry list and then add it online. Change your mind on anything? No problem. We then give you the links and you can change your password and add and delete items as you wish. And we’re always on hand to give our insight into any product or category you come across on your journey.

SMART CONVERTIBLE CAR SEAT We are crazy for the infant car seats created by the German engineers at Cybex. Now we have a convertible seat to swoon over. The Sirona M with SensorSafe 2.0 is a great seat that balances style with high tech safety features. The Sirona M includes a tech-infused chest clip which can alert both driver and caregiver if unsafe situations arise. The SensorSafe monitors the child through the clip which is synced with the vehicle receiver and caregiver’s smartphone. If driver tries to leave the car with baby still in his seat, an alert sounds in both places, to ensure the sleeping or rear facing baby is not forgotten, thereby cutting down on accidental hot car incidents. Additionally, the alarm will sound if baby unbuckles himself while the vehicle is in motion, the back seat becomes too hot or cold, or the child has been seated for too long. The seat also features an adjustable linear side impact protection system, a no-thread harness and a 12 position height adjustable headrest.

Architect Piero Lissoni, the visionary behind 45 Park Place, the luxury condo due to complete 2019, chats with Babesta about his work, his childhood and what he loves in NYC. ONWARD& UPWARD What did you want to be as a child? Any architecture-related childhood memory? I always wanted to be a designer and an architect, but if I could have any other profession or job, I would be a ski instructor. What qualities/characteristics/skills makes a great architect? Architects and designers need to be great observers of their surroundings and skilled problem solvers. Our job is to innovate within the constraints of our reality, and to provide creative solutions that add to the beauty of our environment. It’s a delicate dance. Favorite thing to do when in NYC? I like just walking around and being a part of the city. There’s a tremendous amount of energy and life on the streets of New York. Favorite skyline & why? New York, of course, and then there’s London and Tokyo. How do you get inspired? I find inspiration everywhere. It’s about being fully present in your environment and seeing what is around you. You need to be humanistic, I like to say, but then you need to be very self-disciplined in order to translate your inspiration into real projects. What do you look forward to in 2018? 2018 will be a very busy year. I have a lot of projects in the works and a lot projects coming to fruition including 45 Park Place here in Tribeca.
