fall is fab WITH Babe sta Beat!
F all is upon us again and we’re ready! We are so excited to bust out our 3-D pom pom sweaters by TinyCottons and our eye-print duds (so Mr. Robot!) by Nununu. We love the chameleon of fashion – sometimes it’s sweet, sometimes it’s silly, sometimes it’s dark and sometimes it’s a little rock-and roll. Every time it tells a story! Speaking of stories, we had a blast shooting our fashion story this season with French photog extraordinaire Harten. Instead of two different themes, we went whole hog (in the spirit of our Cybex x Marcel Wanders Hausschwein, right ) for one unabridged tale. It takes its inspiration from a cult classic Kubrick film (in styling only of course), as these kids are in a good gang of ragamuffins with some pretty great fashion orchestrated by style maestro Michel Onofrio. Don’t miss the details with a wink and a nod. We love the gender-bending and eccentric elements that give this story attitude. As you know, Babesta is all about attitude and individuality! We have been active on our Instagram these days—if you haven’t been following you should start. Every Thursday you can catch us live for our Lunchtime Learning program where we give you an inside look of the shop. New product how-tos, cool new fashions and more are on the table for programming. We’ll keep building out more fun online content through the fall/winter so stay tuned! Another exciting thing that debuts this fall is our own Babesta-fied Snoopy and Belle that will be on display at Brookfield Place until October 1. We are the latest to style up this canine duo with some cool duds! Fashion, babies, dogs and film noire. I think we’ve covered it! Hope you have a fantastic fall and we look forward to seeing you in the shop this season! JENN, AZ & THE BABESTA TEAM

IN FASHION| SNOOPY & BELLE Snoopy and Belle make their debut during fashion week at Brookfield Place this fall. These stylish beagles, who have been dolled up by a host of top designers, from Betsey Johnson to Diane Von Furstenberg, will be dressed by Tony Award winning Hamilton costume designer Paul Tazewell as well as several others—Babesta included! Visitors are invited to vote on their fashions on display, and can interact with an app replete with Snapchat & Instagram filters so you can snap a selfie with this debonair duo. September 8-October 1, 2017, Brookfield Place.
AroundTown Fall is here and so are ample things to see and do throughout the city and beyond. Catch a polo match, roll up your sleeves for some urban gardening or get outta the city for some fresh air upstate to enjoy the outdoors whether at a sculpture park, a glamping site or the ski slopes. HORSE AROUND | VICTORY CUP AT GOVERNOR’S ISLAND Hold your horses! The Victory Cup Polo Match is coming to NYC! Throw down a blanket and bring a big hat (why not!), to enjoy the fashion, luxury vehicles, farm-to-table food, adult beverages and more. This is their first event in NYC and it’s going to be a show-stopper. Look forward to a battle of the Ivies: Harvard vs. Yale, rival polo teams with a rich history. In addition to the polo, the event will also feature a classic car show, food trucks, a children’s playground and of course a jaw-dropping view of Manhattan. If you’re feeling fancy (and in need of some top shelf grub), get a Victory Cup Farm-to-Table Pass and enjoy a delicious lunch alongside the polo players on their white linen covered, 200 foot table. Pop your collars, this will be a fun time straight outta the Preppy Handbook! September 23, 2017, Governor’s Island, NYC. Children under 13 free.
EATUP | BROOKLYNGRANGE ROOFTOP FARM This is not Old MacDonald’s Farm. The landscape is decidedly urban, but the organic fruits and vegetables grown here are the taste of the town. In 2010, a group of New Yorkers took on a challenge—to create sustainable urban farming on rooftops of the city. The Brooklyn Grange is the largest rooftop soil farm in the world, producing over 50,000 pounds of organically cultivated produce per year. Visiting the farm is a treat: you can meet the chickens, or shop the farm stand for veggies grown on the roof, honey from the beehives, or Sullivan St Bakery bread. You can even roll up your sleeves with the farm team and get in on the action. Open every Saturday, with FarmFamily Day (featuring special workshops and child-friendly activities), every third Saturday of the month. E-I-E-I-O! 11am-4pm until October 21, 2017. Brooklyn Grange, 37-18 Northern Blvd at 38th St., LIC, Queens.

DON’T MISS | GOOD FENCES MAKE GOOD NEIGHBORS Provocative Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei, collabs with the Public Art Fund with an outdoor installation: Good Fences Make Good Neighbors . Situated around the city, the ambitious exhibit features metal wire security fences in a host of unexpected contexts, from rooftops, and in-between buildings to bus shelters. Weiwei, who was an immigrant to the US in the 1980s, wished to call attention to the current international migration crisis and the xenophobic political environment of 2017. Mayor Bill DeBlasio notes: “Ai Weiwei’s Good Fences Make Good Neighbors serves as a reminder to all New Yorkers that although barriers might attempt to divide us, we must unite to make a meaningful impact in the larger community.” Certainly, in the city that boasts America’s gateway alongside a welcoming crowned statue, one hopes Weiwei’s art be received with the embrace of a friend who knows strength is greater through inclusion. On view around the city fromOctober 12, 2017-February 11, 2018. SO SWEET | CUPCAKE RUN Theremay be no better reason to lace up your running
shoes than a cupcake run! JoinNewYork City’s finest on Oct. 21st in Astoria Park for the yummy event. This unique 5k features 3 checkpoints where participants stop and enjoy a delicious cupcake (what a great motivator!). Fun for the whole family, just remember to bring your sweet tooth! To register go to nyccupcakerun.com .

DON’T MISS | SOULFUL CREATURES The Brooklyn Museum will host a fascinating look into a little known ritual in ancient Egyptian culture and religion: animal mummification. This exhibit grapples with the question of the purpose and evident popularity of the practice, as well as how mummies were made. The mummies on display are from as early as 3000 B.C.E., and include birds, cats, dogs and snakes. Senior Curator of Egyptian, Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Art, Edward Bleiberg, notes that although the exact significance of the mummification is not known, the practice was not uncommon. “Over four million individual ibis mummies have been found at an ancient burial ground in Saqqara, and a nearby dog cemetery yielded over seven million mummies,” he says. Some Egyptians thought animals’ souls could carry messages to the gods, and the mummies were oft accompanied with a handwritten letter. One example on exhibit: a note from a child who complained to a god about her parent’s behavior. Yikes! Brooklyn Museum: September 29, 2017-January 21, 2018. CHECK OUT| STORM KING ART CENTER Art + fresh air = a fun fall weekend! Head out past the Woodbury Common outlets to this acclaimed sculpture park set on 500 acres of hills, fields and woods. Bring your stroller to navigate the terrain, or if it’s a weekend without the kids, rent a bike to explore the expansive park. Currently exhibiting David Smith The White Sculptures , a collection of large white welded steel structures, and Heather Hart, The Oracle of Lacuna , a domestic rooftop, the rest of the home seemingly submerged in the green grass. Time your visit with the changing leaves and you’ve got yourself a magical time in the country! Open through November 2017.

HIT THE SLOPES | HUNTER MOUNTAIN & SCRIBNER’S LODGE Ready for a chic East Coast weekend, just a stone’s throw from the city (relatively speaking of course)? This sixties era roadside lodge with mountain views (including the ski slopes at Hunter), has been remade by a trifecta of teams from the city: Glennon Travis who most recently managed Soho House and his partner Mark Chocock; boutique design firm Studio Tack, and the culinary team behind Greenpoint eatery Esme. Scribner’s Catskills Lodge features 38 rooms and 2 pools, as well as a locally sourced restaurant, Prospect, with an Alpine inspired menu. Rustic yet luxe, this upscale Catskills retreat is perfect for a ski weekender.

MEETTHEMIOS! Airy and light, the Mios stroller hits the streets with the chic confidence a minimalist enjoys.
Mios seat and frame in chrome, 34343, $550; Color pack in Stardust Black, 34344, $100.
“B eyond the age of information is the age of choices,” said Charles Eames in 1971, as the impact of global communication was becoming clearer. Certainly in the stroller market; choices abound. Cybex, the German design company which takes cues from the mid-century modern couple in the look and feel of their strollers, ensures that the design incorporates the necessary functionality both purposefully and beautifully. In reviewing Cybex’s most recent mobility offering, the Mios, we are struck by the simplicity and timelessness of the design. It’s clear that the selection of features gears the stroller to a fashionable urban parent who relies on the vehicle to navigate their life. The chrome crisscrossing frame is architectural in feel, sturdy and luxurious. Its airy seat is made of mesh, perfect for warmer days. The mesh maximizes breathability and helps regulate the child’s temperature, adding to the feeling of lightness and ease. The narrow footprint means it’s simple to navigate the city without intruding on others. The stroller has all the bells and whistles of a premium ride, with an optional bassinet, a reversible seat, an adjustable handlebar, all wheel suspension, a seat insert for when the weather turns cold and an ample shopping basket underneath. It combines with the Cybex series car seats without an adapter making a stylish travel system. All of these details add up. As Eames himself said, “The details are not the details. They make the design.” 8

T he latest collection by Skip Hop is a nod to the city: Vibrant Village celebrates the colorful urban landscape in the sweetest way (and without the grit). A suite of toys, the collection features a few of the fauna familiar to urban dwellers like birds and neighborhood dogs. The interactive activity gym is in black and white, with a splash of bold color, 17 different developmental activities, arches that play upbeat music, sound effects, and lights. In the tradition of Skip Hop’s activity gyms, this playspace can be used from 0+ in several different ways: tummy time, overhead play and playmat. It’s a hub of excitement much like the city itself. < IT TAKES TWO BABY JOGGER’S CITY SELECT LUX AMPS UP THE STYLE & COMFORT
C ity parents are always looking for a good ride to tote their tots in, and a double stroller is a particular conundrum. Some days you have just one child jetting to a playdate and others you have the whole fam enjoying a day on the town. We love a stroller that can adapt perfectly to your changing needs. Enter the City Select LUX by Baby Jogger , a stroller that basically kicks the City Select up a notch. While the Select featured 16 configurations, the new LUX boasts over 20. The LUX features all-wheel suspension so it’s a comfy ride for kids, and there’s a telescoping handlebar, making it equally comfy for parents to push. The stroller also features a decelerating hand brake and foot parking break for when you’re scooting around the city on your day’s adventure. And, when the day is done, this stroller has a compact fold, 30% smaller than the original City Select. T he super safe and stylish convertible car seats by Clek now come in two new colors: purple and green. While pink has been a girls’ best friend, purple is now making a cool alternative. The woodlands green nods to the sustainable construction of the car seat. The Foonf is well known as the standard in safety, able to be used rear facing for up to 4 years, and then, when turned around, affixes to the seat using rigid LATCH. The Fllo is the lighter option, a favorite for city-folk that works on a flip foot rather than a base, employing a similar yet slightly different energy management system. Both chairs feature Crypton anti microbial and easy-to-clean fabrics withGreenGuard to prevent against spills. These chairs are some of the narrowest on the market, and can be installed 3 across in many vehicles. It’s nice to know that any backseat passengers have room to ride alongside your most precious cargo. Limited edition Foonf and Fllo available in Prince (purple/black), Aura (purple/white). Foonf $449.95, Fllo $369.95; Cadet (green/white), Woodlands (green/black). Foonf $469.99, Fllo $399.99. PURPLE REIGN > THE CLEK FOONF IN ‘PRINCE’ IS ROYALTY ON THE ROAD

IN FASHION > BUGABOO’S NEW ATELIER STROLLER IS A LESSON IN LUXURY
B ugaboo just introduced the Atelier collection, a limited-edition design for the Bugaboo Cameleon and Bugaboo Buffalo. The off-white melange canopy and faux leather details give a fresh yet classic feel. The subtle detailing, like the contrasting liner around the underseat basket give a considered flair, reminding us that there is an eye toward detail. The included seat inlay has a quilted look, as does the footmuff, an elegant cold weather accompaniment (sold separately). 3
Bugaboo Buffalo Atelier complete , 36526, $1399; Bugaboo footmuff Atelier , 36527, $149.95. Below : Bugaboo high performance rain cover , 36535, $69.95.
BUGABOO’S HIGH PERFORMANCE RAIN COVER RULES < LET IT RAIN
A nother newbie to the Bugaboo collection this fall is their high performance rain cover, a well considered protector to the elements. Come rain or shine, you still need to get out and about, so a good rain cover is a necessity that’s best to keep in your underseat basket in case the need arises. Not only for rainy days, it’s also the go-to for colder weather to keep baby snug in his ride and protected from the wind. This new version has a built in bag (it flips out and can flip back into the bag and be easily tucked under the stroller). The rain cover features a 180 degree zipper that can be opened with one hand, bisecting the stroller. This means it’s easy to take your child in or out without removing it. The rain cover also features breathable mesh vents on both sides, and there’s even an integrated storage pocket for your keys or phone. The PVC-free rain cover maintains clear visibility so your child doesn’t miss out on the adventure, whatever the weather.

STUPENDOUSLY SURREAL, THE MADE-IN SERBIA, DESIGNED-IN-LONDON BRAND ALWAYS MAKES A STATEMENT.
at the University of Monterrey in Mexico. It was a great experience, but I wanted to design and not teach at such a young age. After, I got a job working for Zara Home, which taught me a lot in terms of skills but also it taught me how not to manage people. Happy workers are productive workers. I swore to myself after that I would never again work full time for another company. It is always difficult to incorporate a few different skills when working for other companies and I tend to get bored very easily. Having my own collection lets me incorporate all my skills: pattern cutting, print, embroidery and business.” ON MANUFACTURING IN SERBIA “I knew that Serbia used to have a very strong textile industry which largely shut down during the trade sanctions in the 90s, leaving a lot of skilled workers unemployed. I wanted to do all I could to promote Serbian manufacturers. So, RaspberryPlum was born. We have our own small manufacturing facility in Kraljevo, Serbia and we also hire other local manufacturers to do our sewing. We work with a small family owned business near Belgrade to produce our socks and tights.”
E ver artful , A leksandra Matthews’ innovative (even surreal at times) line of children’s fashions pushes the boundaries of color, shape and fantasy, and is always ripe for a photo op. While RaspberryPlum is designed in the UK, it’s made in Serbia. The brand name is a nod to the designers’ native country: “Serbia is one of the largest exporters of raspberries and plums in the world and the majority of our collection is produced there,” she says. We were able to catch up with Matthews and learn more about this artisanal brand that’s inspired by the London art scene and designed using traditional crafts techniques. MATTHEWS’ BACKGROUND “I have a master’s degree in printed textiles from The Royal College of Art in London and a BA from University of Westminster London. I started out my working life in education. My first job after my MA was teaching and writing the curriculum for BA Fashion and Textiles

ON INSPIRATION “It really depends on the season. That could be films, music, art or theatre. I am lucky to live in London where there is so much creativity to discover. I try to go to see at least one exhibition per week. I tend to go more for surreal or abstract art from the early to mid 20th century. I also love to look at album covers from this period. I think there is a lot of inspiration there.”
LOVES & PET PEEVES IN FASHION “I absolutely love my job. It is full of creativity, imagination and story telling. You can step into another world with it. It makes people happy as they can take on different personas with different outfits. On one hand I love the pace of it as it gives me the opportunity to create something new every six months and to improve and learn. There is no progress in repeating what you feel safe with. The key is in taking risks. Fashion gives you the opportunity to reinvent yourself. On the other hand keeping up with that pace is very stressful and costly. It is like investing in a whole new business twice a year. There are lots
ON THE DESIGN PROCESS “While I am researching a season I get so many ideas on a certain
subject that it is too difficult to put [it all] into one collection, so by then I already know what is going to be the inspiration for the following collection. Usually these subjects are ones that I am personally deeply passionate about and that I am surrounded with in my everyday life. I think of a story and put mood boards together which visually tell that story. I try to translate that story into form and cut by initially experimenting—trying to think out of the box on how a cut is going to work. At the same time I consider how graphics and embroidery are going to enhance the garment and reinforce the story. I think a garment needs to be special in some way, different from anything else seen before and giving confidence to the wearer, whether that might be a child or an adult. I believe my clothes give kids courage to be seen and noticed without being show-offish.” ON THE AUTUMN / WINTER COLLEC TION “The AW17 collection is based on a 20th century
of components that go into making a collection and my job is to make sure all of those components arrive on time and fit together. This speed of producing new collections every six months stands against my ethics in a way. I don’t believe in throw-away products. I believe in sustainable ethically produced fashion which doesn’t follow trends and which lasts for generations. Unfortunately as fun as it is, it is a business.” ON THE PERFECT OCCAS ION FOR A R ASPBERRY P LUM FROCK “That really depends on the mood of the wearer rather then the place. If you feel like wearing a posh frock to the sand pit I am all for it. I love expressing myself through clothes whatever the occasion and that is the ethos I carry through to my collection. Rules don’t apply.” ON THE FUTURE OF FASHION “I hope that the fashion industry will take greater care to use more sustainable processes in manufacturing. Customers are becoming more aware of where their clothes are coming from and demand more transparency. This should hopefully influence the supply chain and manufacturing laws. Unfortunately the fashion
avant-garde circus and its influence on art and fashion. It pays homage to artists such as Matisse who took inspiration for many of his collages from the circus as well as legendary Elsa Schiaparelli, whose designs were bold, surreal and closely linked with circus costume and graphics. I am very excited about how the customers will react to these playful shapes and graphics.”
industry is one of the biggest world pollutants and this needs to change. Cheap, throw-away fashion is one of the biggest causes of environmental damage and the source of human rights violations. Some customers will become more aware of this and buy less but get better quality brands with more transparency. I believe we are going through an important evolution of awareness not just in fashion but in general.”
HEY, MS. DJ Baby DJ School founder, Natalie Weiss, talks tunes with Babesta.
T hey say that music soothes the savage beast. The same can be said for toddlers. Baby DJ School founder Natalie Weiss insists it’s all in the mix.“DJing is about discovering music that excites you and sharing it with other people,” says Weiss. “If you can match beats or scratch records, awesome, but the most important thing is being a selector who has brought music from a broad range of genres so you are prepared for lots of types of crowds,” she says. Her current crowd is a bit smaller in stature than at the clubs she’s played in the past. Focused on kids 2 months to 5 years, Weiss began cranking it up for the kinderset with her Brooklyn based beat-driven class that mixes turntables and percussion instruments. It all started after a babysitting gig for a musically inclined toddler who took to her tunes. She had been taking him to his “regular” music class, when it dawned on her, she could create something cooler, more modern, connecting with parents who counted Diplo and Tiesto on their playlists. “The class teaches many things from the world of DJing: the names of DJ equipment, information on various genres of dance music and more. Every song we sing is cued in by the little ones using real DJ equipment,” she says. It’s a hands-on class, with no more than 12 kids at a time, and the mini-mixologists are able to scratch on the turntable, suited up with headphones and their own sets of percussion instruments. Yes, there are motor skill benefits (she’s seen babies develop their pincer grasp and the ability to perform index finger isolation earlier) and social benefits (learning to share and take turns) but the magic is really in the music. While the class touches on an array of genres and musical greats, Weiss has her own preferences that sometimes make their way in. Her go-to DJ is Kim Anh, an LA based mixmaster with whomWeiss has worked before, and she counts Ethiopian funk from the 70s, jungle from the 90s, IDM from the early 2000s and most everything on the label Warp Records and the Broke City Collective as favorites. Not just work for Weiss, the music biz is a family affair: Weiss’s husband, who goes by Jah Bones, makes some mad mixes and is part of a band called Eaters.
Before starting the school Weiss spent a decade DJing, a pastime that began when she was throwing benefit parties to raise money for her theatrical projects (she’s also a playwright and composer). After that, she was asked by other theatre companies to man the music at their events. “Then I started a party with some very established DJs and they eventually let me jump on the decks and I took it from there!” We all know, give a kid technology and they’ll be a contender in no time, their ability to conquer all things electronic legendary. No surprise, there is a new crop of kid DJs thanks to this craze, middle schoolers with the music library that spans 5x their ages. “My favorites are DJ Alden and DJ Chloe L (I teach her!). They started young, their parents believed in them enough to invest in the equipment and lessons and the kids are truly passionate about it.” Not just an East Coast thing, Baby DJ School is soon to launch in LA. We’re excited to tune in and turn it up!

Being a parent in the city has its own challenges. Arming yourself with the perfect ride means you can take it all in stride! T he most important gear a city parent needs is the stroller, and we’ve pooled our best tips so that you get it right. There’s no one-size-fits-all and no stroller that does everything. It’s a matter of trade-offs, so ask yourself some questions. Are you in a walk up or a doorman building? Do you think you’ll be doing a lot of neighborhood strolling (rather than jumping on city buses and trains)? You also want to think of your preferred features. Some strollers have bassinets included (many can be used overnight and replace a furniture piece in your home to boot!) Some will recline flat, and some have seats that can face in and out. Some have all-terrain wheels and all wheel suspension to make your ride smooth. When you add features, you will inevitably be adding to the weight and price. But the stroller is the key to your mobility, so figure out what’s important and decide amongst the models that offer those features. It will be a balancing act (and know most city folk have two strollers, one for the neighborhood and another for travel). Check out our favorite picks of primary strollers for city dwellers of every stripe!

BUGABOO DONKEY
DOUBLINGUP; ITTAKESTWO
The Donkey is the chic workhorse for two kids. It can start off as a “mono”, seating one child and featuring a convenient side basket. Widen it up for two seats and the world is your oyster for configuration: two bassinets, two seats, two car seats or any combo. We love the hearty wheels and great push. This stroller is even easy to pop a curb with which is nothing to sneeze at in the world of doubles! Customize, accessorize and get strolling!
Double-wide or long and lean, the latest fleet of double strollers are masters of change. W e ’ re saying it . You’re never going to love your double stroller as much as you loved your single. Double strollers are bigger and heavier, but you can’t blame them: They have two times the precious cargo! But the newest doubles are better than ever! We love the “transformers-style” construction of late, where they can act as a single when needed and then be transformed into a double on a dime. When choosing the best model for you, you’ve got to decide: double-wide or in-line. There are benefits and drawbacks to each: double-wides are easier to pop the curbs while in-lines are less cumbersome on a busy city street. Let’s get strolling!
Bugaboo Donkey stroller black/ black twin , $1975.
City Select LUX with second seat kit , $829.
UPPABABY VISTA The Vista features the most choice in the smallest in-line footprint. We love the Vista in double formation as it feels super manageable for a stroller that accommodates two! Use it with two bassinets, two seats, two car seats or a combo of these. The great wheels & amazing underseat basket means that you’re all set for a day on the town!
BABY JOGGER CITY SELECT LUX
So many configurations, it will blow your mind! Whether you’re single strolling or doubling up, the choice is yours. Have the kids face each other or back to back; both front or both back with prams, car seats, seats or even a bench seat for older kids! This is the ultimate in choice for an in-line stroller!

HAVE CARSEAT
WILLTRAVEL HOW TO DO BABY ON BOARD RIGHT.
Aton cloud Q car seat in birds of paradise , $499.95; Mios stroller frame in matte black , 34342, $550.
INFANT CAR SEATS: As newborns, the first seat they’ll get is the infant car seat. It’s rear facing only and exists to manage the energy in an accident to minimize harm to the child. There are a plethora of features, from anti-rebound bars, load legs, telescoping side impact protection and more. For new parents (especially city parents), you look for a seat that is compatible with your stroller so that it makes a great travel system, and is light in case you have to carry it! But, the most important feature for city parents is the European seatbelt router, a small plastic piece on the back of the seat, that allows for safe installation without the base, only using the car’s seatbelt. City parents are always in and out of cars, be them Ubers, Lyfts, taxis and zipcars (as well as their own cars), so being able to install safely with the seatbelt is worth its weight in gold. The lapbelt goes across the front of the seat, while the shoulder harness wraps around the back of the seat, making for a super-snug and safe installation. Infant seats will last you about a year, but because they’re light and portable, they make sense for city folk who don’t want the larger convertible seat until they have to. TO USE
S tates are catching up to what the American Academy of Pediatrics has been saying: “Children under 2 years of age shall ride in a rear facing car seat unless the child weighs 40lbs or more or is 40 inches or more tall.” Several states have made, or are in the process of making this recommendation law (including New York). Whether law or not, it’s a great rule of thumb to keep your baby safe and sound on your next road trip. Let’s step back for a moment and give you the big picture of car seats. You’re going to go through 3-4 stages of seat until your child can travel in a car using simpl y the seatbelt: Infant car seat, convertible car seat, high back booster, and backless booster seat. Each solution is for a different age and stage, and you want to get to know your seats well. So many are installed incorrectly thereby putting children at greater risk of injury in an accident. There are plenty of youtube videos that can help (watch on your phone while doing the installation) or make an appointment with the Car Seat Lady—our go-to expert on everything car seat related.
